Graciosa wins Autumn Cup
WHILE the rain stayed away, Graciosa revelled in the heavy track conditions at Ballina to make first place and a class record in the BettorTrader Autumn Cup yesterday.
The Ballina Jockey Club race meeting saw plenty of scratchings due to the wet track, however Graciosa’s Coffs Harbour trainer Trent Greentree said ‘everything was in her favour’.
“It was an added bonus being a heavy track, there wasn’t many better wet trackers,” he said.
Greentree said the five-year-old mare had been in good form recently, and that after five rides jockey Glenn Lynch has a ‘very good understanding of her now’.
“I came with one runner and the win made today worthwhile,” he said.
“She’s just been a mare that has taken her time.”
Winning jockey Glenn Lynch said the hardest part of the day was the five hour drive.
“She just did it all herself,” he said.
“It was a good win, and she’s doing well. We looked at the field and there were a few chances, but didn’t see any dangers, which is a good sign.”
Graciosa edged out Yass River, Jimoda and Surety to take home the $6300 winnings, and Ballina Jockey Club CEO Sarah Wills said the race ‘went really well’.
“It was a very good one with a very good horse,” she said.
And with the weather behaving, Wills said the day went as expected.
“It’s been pretty good really, and they seem to be handling the heavy track well,” she said.
“We’ve had a few scratchings, but we had big fields to start with.”
Kevin Riddell, director of BettorTrader, sponsors and developers of Australia’s leading horse racing investment software, didn’t have any hot tips for the main race but was pleased with the Ballina event.
“We only started becoming involved late last year, but we’re locals and we like to support our local clubs,” he said.
“A lot of people don’t realise how big racing is here, and the local trainers work really hard.”
