Head injury in warm-up forces Wright out of the Pipe Masters
FORMER Lennox Head surfer Owen Wright, a contender for the world surfing title, has withdrawn from the Billabong Pipe Masters after inujuring his head in a practice session.
A form surfer throughout the pre-event warm-ups, world No 5 Wright again navigated an excellent tube ride in the pre-event surf yesterday before taking several 15- to 20-foot waves on the head.
The impact of the waves caused severe concussion and mild bleeding in the brain, forcing Wright to withdraw from the final event of the year and the World Surf League title race.
He remains in hospital but is expected to make a full recovery.
Characterised by his unparalleled physicality, progressive surfing and fearless tube-riding, Wright's year featured improved consistency punctuated by excellent performances at heavy-water left-handers with a win in Fiji and a third in Tahiti.
His position in the Billabong Pipe Masters has been taken by Hawaiian Mason Ho.
