Hayne ‘definitely an option’ for 49ers return

FORMER NRL star Jarryd Hayne is back in the frame to play for the San Francisco 49ers as early as this weekend.

After a mixed start to the season, Hayne was cut from the squad last week.

That gave all other 31 NFL franchises the option to pick him up, but when that didn't eventuate he was re-signed to San Francisco's practice squad.

But with injuries to the team's three running backs - Carlos Hyde, Reggie Bush and Mike Davis - special teams co-ordinator Thomas McGaughey acknowledged Hayne could be promoted.

"He's definitely an option," McGaughey told reporters.

Bush has been ruled out for the rest of the season after knee surgery, while Hyde and Davis are expected to miss several weeks.

Kick-returner and wide-receiver Bruce Ellington is expected to take over the punt return job against Atlanta on Monday morning.
