High-revving Katie hits a high as top Harley mechanic

SHE is the first female to win the national Harley-Davidson Apprentice Mechanic of the Year award.

But it's not the first time Katie Elliott has smashed gender stereotypes out of the park.

Not that long ago, she was chasing camels, goats and pigs in the Aussie outback, changing blown trail bike tyres and mustering cattle as a jillaroo.

The 24-year-old character, who told the Sunshine Coast Daily she had just won an argument with a bike when contacted yesterday, was presented with her trail-blazing award at the end of a five-day training course in Sydney last week.

"I didn't expect it, being the only girl," the third-year apprentice at Sunshine Coast Harley-Davidson said. "I'm the first female going through the Harley training ... that makes me feel pretty special.

"It also makes me determined to be good, to show that all people have equal ability."

She began as a detailer before being offered an apprenticeship.

"It was a big step for me putting on a girl as a mechanic," director John Faithfull said.
