Gympie singer’s X Factor battle

SUPPORT for Gympie X Factor contestant Caitlyn Shadbolt must translate to votes for the singer to continue in the competition.

The country performer has enjoyed strong hometown support since her first audition on the show to now find herself in the top eight contestants.

But a sharp reminder of the remaining eight contestants' vulnerability before tomorrow evening's live performance show was apparent during Monday night's live result show.

Sydney Carter went home after landing in the bottom two while the safe contestants were read out in order of total votes received - an X Factor Australia first.

Caitlyn weathered an anxious wait on stage to have her name called as safe in sixth position.

Based on that week's votes, mum Helen Shadbolt said Tuesday it was hard to know the true extent of the voting insight.

"The votes could be really tight, we just don't know," she said.

"It could be a few hundred or even less separating the singers."

Caitlyn proved her versatility last Sunday, taking on Lady Gaga's single, You and I, and injecting her country DNA into the track.

The X Factor judges liked it, too, as an increasingly confident Caitlyn worked the X Factor stage, turning in an electrifying performance.

Song choice remains contentious and The Gympie Times asked Facebook followers for their thoughts.

Meanwhile, the Shadbolt family has been touched by the torrent of Gympie support and wanted to remind everyone to keep voting.

The family, including parents Ian and Helen Shadbolt and brother Jake, could not be contacted yesterday but were preparing for another trip to Sydney to support the singer.

X Factor, Channel 7 Sunday night from 6.30pm

WHAT song do you think Caitlyn should perform on X Factor now she has made the top eight?

Something by an Australian artist.

- Neranda Krafft

She needs something deep, shows her range a bit more.

- Nicole Ballard

Dixie Chicks.

- Rebecca Bevan

Jimmy Barnes' I'd Die To Be With You Tonight.

- Rhiannon Jeans

One of her own selection; one of her many originals! To showcase what a talented songwriter she is ... but at least we know she is.

- Fiona Cole

Metal.

- RosyandKieran Gailer

Anything but country because she came fourth last.

It's Rock and Roll week on Sunday.

I hope she doesn't try to countrify whatever song she is given.
