Group aims to save orangutans

Rainforest Rescue chief executive officer Kelvin Davies said the orangutan population on Sumatra had dwindled to only 6624.

AFTER successfully raising the funds to buy a chunk of the Daintree Forest to protect it from development, Northern Rivers group Rainforest Rescue is now on a mission to save orangutans at Sumatra.

Rainforest Rescue chief executive officer Kelvin Davies said the organisation wanted to raise $60,000 by April 13 to protect and restore 60 hectares of orangutan habitat at Sumatra.

The money would pay for the removal of 5460 illegally planted oil palms in a National Park and replace them with 60,000 rainforest seedlings. Once restored, the area would be patrolled to prevent rogue palm oil farmers undoing the group's good work.

In an appeal for help, Mr Davies said the orangutan population on Sumatra had dwindled to only 6624 as humans destroyed their habitat.

"These gentle 'people of the forest' will slip quietly to extinction unless we rescue their rainforest today," he said in a statement.

Mr Davies said he needed to raise $60,000 for the project by April 13.

The project would be directed by Orangutan Centre founder and 2012 UN Hero of the Forests Award finalist Paunt Hadisiswoyo.

Mr Davies said an $82 donation to the project would cover the removal of 10 illegally planted oil palm trees, while $100 would pay for 50 rainforest trees to be grown into seedlings and planted. To completely restore one hectare of forest would cost about $1000.
