Grommets' eyes are on the final prize

THEY'VE come, they've seen and they've just about conquered the breaks at Lennox Head and their nearest competitors over a weekend of high-level junior surfing.

Now it's come down to today's finals of the Rusty Gromfest with local hopes Nikki Hosking and Lyla Wright ready to contest their 16 years finals.

The pair got the better of several Australian and international competitors in their divisions to get within reach of the final prize.

In building one-metre conditions, surfers revelled in the local break, led by 16 years competitor Wade Carmichael (Avoca Beach), who was outstanding in his early-round heat.

But Ryan Callinan (Merewether), with a combined heat total of 16.00 (out of a possible 20) including a single wave score of 9.00 (out of a possible 10), was the morning's stand-out.

The Rusty Gromfest honour roll contains the likes of ASP world champions Mick Fanning and Stephanie Gilmore.
