Greens push for carbon tax scheme

GREENS candidate for Page Jeff Johnson today urged sitting MP Janelle Saffin to make a concerted effort to lobby Julia Gillard to include support for the Greens’ carbon tax proposal in her upcoming announcement of a new climate change policy.

“The Greens’ carbon tax proposal offers a positive choice for real, immediate action on climate change. If Labor wants to prove it is serious about tackling climate change Julia Gillard must make a commitment to a carbon tax before the election,” Mr Johnson said.

“I call on Janelle Saffin to lobby Prime Minister Gillard to back the Greens proposed carbon tax. Action on reducing Australia’s greenhouse emissions can’t wait until 2013, we need a price on carbon now."

Mr Johnson said the Greens’ carbon tax proposal would set a fixed carbon price starting at $23 per tonne and would remain in place until a global climate treaty was signed.
