Greens candidate aims high
THE Northern Rivers could eventually become totally self-sufficient, according to the Greens candidate for the Federal seat of Page, Jeff Johnson.
Launching his campaign with NSW Greens MP Lee Rhiannon last week, he said the region had the perfect conditions.
“We could generate our own power through solar, we have plenty of water here and we could grow our own food,” he said.
“If you can’t do it here, then you can’t do it anywhere.”
Mr Johnson said ‘anything could happen’ at the next Federal election, but he was being realistic about his chances against Labor’s Janelle Saffin and the Nationals’ Kevin Hogan.
“We’re just really hopeful of increasing our vote and holding the other candidates accountable,” he said.
“All I can do is raise the profile of issues I feel passionate about, which are climate change and sustainability.
“This also is one of the fastest-growing areas of the State.
“We really need to be looking at things like public transport, buses, commuter rail and cycling networks.”
Mr Johnson said he had not decided how he would distribute his preferences.
