Grave tales continue with the next instalment this weekend
THE next story in our series Tales from the Grave will be in this Saturday's Weekend Star and also be online the same day.
Each monument in our Northern Rivers graveyards represents the stories, the history and the contributions made by the people whose earthly remains are buried below.
While families are nearby, the sites are often looked after, with fresh flowers laid and weeds kept at bay.
When loved ones move away, die out or over the passage of time have no memory of those who lie in their final resting place,
stories get forgotten and history gets 'buried'.
Appearing monthly in our Weekend Star, journalist Samantha Elley has been traipsing through the cemeteries of the Northern Rivers to unlock the history of our ancestors.
Sam is discovering stories long forgotten, people with colourful lives, poignant memories and even a chuckle or two.
In our next story Sam was approached by a descendant of a Ballina pioneer to be able to tell his story.
Sometimes we forget the challenges and hardships our pioneers must have faced all those years ago when Australia was closer to it's natural state than today.
You too can be part of this project.
If you know of a grave or memorial you are curious about, send in a photo and any information to Sam at email@example.com.
