Have you got a beer belly? Get outside and do some exercise!

THERE'S a lot more involved than just beer when it comes to a beer belly.

The phrase is a colloquial term for central obesity and Mackay GP Superclinic's Dr John McIntosh said it was caused from a high carbohydrate and calorie intake, which is found in beer.

"Central obesity normally happens in men and it's when they retain fat around their abdomen," Dr McIntosh said.

"It is one of the major risk factors of heart disease and early death."

Dr McIntosh said he thought the term 'beer belly' had come about because the people who tended to consume the high carbohydrate and calorie drink typically had central obesity.

His advice for all Mackay men out there with beer bellies was to get outdoors and do some exercise.

"If you are doing nothing, then just go for a 10-15 minute walk... and by the end of the week you will get livelier."
