Goonengerry kids excel

GOONENGERRY Public School students can look forward to a summer of outdoor events come rain, hail or shine after taking out the Byron Shire title of The Northern Star's Marquee Shade Your Team Promotion.

Twenty marquees were given out in the promotion to teams who collected the highest number of coupons (cut from copies of The Northern Star) per team member.

A concerted effort by the rural primary school of just 31 students was the main ingredient for victory, with principal Tracey Barnes inspiring the troops to success.

"We've got a fantastic supportive community and P&C.

"As soon as there's a challenge thrown, they get behind us," said Ms Barnes proudly.

And they certainly rose to the challenge, collecting a whopping 226 coupons per team member.

"The kids rang all their rellies and asked their neighbours. We'd come to school and find handfuls of coupons in the mailbox," said Ms Barnes.

And the secret to success?

"I think it's just persistence; a bit of harassing from the kids. Unless you put it out there, you won't get anywhere."

Goonengerry will get plenty of use out of the marquee at their frequent inter-school sporting events.

They'll also be able to replace the old tent they used as a roadside stall to sell the school's vegie garden produce with the brand new marquee.

TOP TEAMS

  • Lismore Workers Swim Team - Lismore Shire - 327 coupons per member.

  • Goonengerry Public School - Byron Shire - 226 coupons per member.
  • Kyogle Rugby League Football Club - Kyogle Shire - 173 coupons per member
