Cattle report: Rain's good, but not for the saleyards

WITH the storm season approaching and good rain already falling over North Coast and Tablelands areas, saleyards across the state are finding cattle numbers rapidly declining.

At Lismore Saleyards 156 cattle were offered on Tuesday and the market was stronger for all classes.

The light veal topped at 288c with heavy yearlings making to 290c/kg. Few weaner steers were on offer, with the best making to 282c for the light-weight calves.

Cow prices were strong, especially for those going back into the paddock, making 194c to return from $750 to $840. Heavy dairy cows realised a top of $1526 with most of the better cows in the range of 215-228c/kg.

Steers sold well again, topping at $1460 and ranging from $986 for the lighter steer up to $1350.

Numbers will be very scarce up to Christmas and hopefully this will hold the market up, especially if good rain falls over the state.
