Golf: Win makes Jay’s day

BALLINA junior Jay Mackenzie has added another feather to his cap by winning the Lismore Workers Golf Club Easter tournament.

The 16-year-old shot rounds of 70 and 72 to finish two over par, one shot clear of Murwillumbah golfer Lucas Higgins.

Mackenzie is one of the best juniors on the Northern Rivers and is gearing up to represent the NSW Under-15 team in the Australian boys amateur and interstate team series in Tasmania next month.

"I'm really proud of this because it's the first time I've played in it and it was a really good field.

"To win this tournament is a pretty big deal around here."

About 460 golfers took part in the annual tournament.

It had a strong field this year as it was incorporated with the Northern Rivers District championships.

"The best golfers from the Northern Rivers were there and a couple of good ones from Queensland too," Mackenzie said.

Mackenzie is a member of the Ballina Golf Club and started playing six years ago when he signed up to a junior program.

He finished fourth in the 15 years boys division of the NSW State age championships two years ago then went on to become the youngest golfer to win the open club championship at Ballina.
