GM attacks 'unfortunate criticism'

RICHMOND Valley Council general manager Brian Wilkinson has hit back at scathing criticisms of council from retiring meatworks chief executive Gary Burridge.

Mr Burridge accused the council of being out of touch with business for its "appalling behaviour" raising the Northern Cooperative Meat Company's water rates by $1 million earlier this year.

Mr Wilkinson yesterday described Mr Burridge's comments as "unfortunate" as he had previously stated he did not want to fight council nor debate the issue through the media.

The general manager defended council's understanding of economic drivers - including the meatworks - and said council was required to manage its own business in accordance with legislative provisions and other State Government criteria.

"The need for council to amend its water-pricing structure has been known to the cooperative since 2004," he said, adding it was the council's role to equitably manage the community's water for all.
