Glass attack in fight over boyfriend
JUST days after she turned 19, Goonellabah woman Yasemin Mealey has been charged with a savage glassing attack using a broken beer bottle on a girlfriend in an apparent love triangle argument.
Mealey, a bar tender, appeared in Lismore Local Court yesterday afternoon charged with two offences: wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm; and recklessly wounding the woman on the front patio of a Goonellabah house about 4am yesterday.
The victim was rushed to Lismore Base Hospital by ambulance with a 10cm gash above her right eyebrow.
No further details on the woman's condition were available yesterday.
Following a bail application by her defence lawyer Amy Barker, which was opposed by police, magistrate Michael Dakin granted bail.
However, Mealey was still in custody at 5pm yesterday after being unable to meet the financial conditions of her bail.
Police facts put before the court during yesterday's bail application allege Mealey, when arrested by police after the attack, was found with a broken beer bottle in her handbag.
Police allege that moments after an argument between her and a friend over a boyfriend, Mealey walked up behind her friend yelling 'I'm going to kill you bitch'.
She is alleged to have then struck the woman with a broken beer bottle to the right side of her forehead above her eye.
Police and ambulance were called with police officers finding Mealey near the scene of the alleged attack.
A police officer's search found the broken neck of a beer bottle in her handbag.
Police said Mealey had made some admissions to striking the woman and that the broken bottle found in her handbag was the weapon.
Witnesses at the house told police they saw Mealey break the beer bottle moments before attacking the woman.
The case was adjourned to December 8.
