Gladstone tradies pay millions for Curtis Island gear

GLADSTONE tradies' love affair with buying the Curtis Island construction's pre-loved gear reached new heights at the latest Hassalls auction, according to a post-auction stock count.

Hassalls general manager Steve Wall said tradies forked out a staggering $1.2 million on second hand construction equipment, ranging from rolls of plastic to trucks.

He said it's taken his company's total sell off of Curtis Island construction gear "north of $16 million".

But he reassured those who missed out there's "around $20 million left to go".

"The tradesmen turnout was more pronounced at this auction, as there was a larger range of general small construction equipment for sale," Mr Walls said.

A post-auction stock count shows bidders cleaned up the 319 lots of gear that went under the hammer, with a clearance rate of 98%.

Tradies also got into bargains on vehicles, with Hassalls offloading 74 lots of "commercial and light vehicles" which sold an average of 8% cheaper than previous auctions.

While there were 400 bidders on-site, a spokesman for Hassalls said the sheer number of items up for grabs meant "if you're the only person going for it then you can get a real deal".

The Hassalls spokesman also said small business owners after "large trailers and small trucks" among other items were also big buyers.

Mr Walls said small business owners are thinking up all types of reasons to throw down a bid, with one small business purchasing pallets of plastic drink containers which she then "resold … in her local store to make a profit."
