Girl in the curl flys the Lennox flag at Gromfest

NORTHERN Rivers surfers shone in wobbly waves at the Rip Curl GromSearch held at Sydney's Maroubra Beach on the weekend.

Three Lennox Head surfers, Nyxie Ryan, brother Denbe and Jai Glinderman, flew the flag for the region making some excellent manoeuvres and signalling their serious intent to make a career in the sport.

Natural-footer Ryan, 14, continued to dominate the GromSearch series, taking out the 14-Girls division in the throaty Maroubra peaks, amassing 15.00 points to get the win ahead of fellow junior dynamo Cedar Leigh-Jones (Avalon, NSW) who finished in the runner-up spot.

The LeBa Boardrivers and All Girls Surfriders athlete who rides a 5'4” board said the competition was very fierce.

"There were heaps of girls ripping,” she said.

"The waves had a bit of a wobble, but I managed to find the scores.”

Next up for the dynamic youngster is the Gromfest on the Sunshine Coast in December and the Australian titles next month.

Dembe, 12, was second in the always-competitive 12U Boys division, making some quality scores and impressing the judges with his technique.

Riding a 5'0”, he said the waves were dumping onto a sandbank and he had a nail-biting wait for some surfable swell.

"I did not catch a wave for seven minutes (into the heat) then caught a wave that held up all the way in and got me a 8.3 score,” he said.

"Unit I got it I was freaking out.”

Jai Glinderman also from Lennox Head showed excellent form and took out third in the 14U boys final, which was taken out by Marlon Harrison of Coolangatta.

The event saw surfers receive points for their results, which then count towards a National GromSearch ratings system, allowing surfers from around Australia to compare their results with contemporaries.

Leaders on the National Ratings will then qualify for the last event of the series, the Rip Curl GromSearch National Final, to be held at Woonoona, NSW on January 15-17, 2017.
