Girl dies after highway crash

A FIVE-YEAR-OLD girl has died after a shocking car accident on the Pacific Highway south of Broadwater yesterday afternoon.

The girl suffered critical head injuries after being thrown from the car just before 3pm.

She was airlifted by the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter to Lismore Base Hospital, where she died early this morning.

Police are now preparing a report for the information of the Coroner.

The driver of the car, a 49-year-old woman believed to be the girl's grandmother, from Melton in Victoria, escaped injury.

An eight-year-old boy, also from Melton, escaped with minor injuries, grazes and bruising. He has since been released from Lismore Base Hospital.

Both children were travelling in the back seat.

Officers attached to Ballina Crash Investigation Unit are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
