Gillard 'adding to regional areas' feelings of neglect'

NATIONALS Leader Warren Truss has described Julia Gillard's decision to spend a week in western Sydney as a "cynical blitz" that would only add to a feeling of neglect in regional areas.

The Prime Minister will stay in a Rooty Hill motel as she attempts to shore up support in a number of key marginal seats.

But Mr Truss said the move would "rub salt into the wounds" of people "doing it tough" in the regions.

"Julia Gillard as PM has never spent a week in regional Australia," Mr Truss said.

"She flies in and flies out for photo ops around floods and fires, but that's the extent of her interest."

Mr Truss, who was on a tour of regional Western Australia, told APN Newsdesk Ms Gillard's western Sydney strategy was further proof the government was more concerned with its political survival than the concerns of regional people.

"Over the past five years the Nationals have traversed regional areas across all states and territories to meet people, hear their concerns and address their issues," he said.

"Labor's preoccupation with western Sydney is a political ploy to shore up seats, we need a government focused on the people and our country, not focused on itself."
