Dedication yields results for locals losing winter weight

HE'S powering ahead with his diet and exercise regime, having lost around seven kilograms so far.

Goonellabah's Greg Holland is sticking to smaller portions, doing regular walking and getting to the gym.

"It's mainly salad or fresh veggies and chicken or steak for dinner," said the 41-year-old.

"But the secret is eating less."

Leeanne Sanders, 54, is also on the straight road to success. She's lost five and a half kilograms so far but she says, more importantly, she's focusing on health.

"I've also gone cold turkey on the sweets," she says.

Cristy Handcock, our 31-year-old Casino mum, is keeping up the bike riding and walking and has added another kilogram and a half to her weight loss. She's doing great and has loads of support with everyone cheering her on.

Donna Connolly, 42, has been enjoying Zumba classes as a change from her gym routine and is still eating healthily and seeing the scales go down.

EXPERT TIPS: DIET VERSUS EXERCISE

WEIGHT loss is always talked about in terms of diet and exercise but never underestimate how important diet is compared to exercise.

When you think about it logically, we all generally eat three times a day, sometimes more. That means that we will eat at least 21 times in a week.

Even if someone exercises once a day, which is very rare, that still only works out at exercising seven times a week compared to eating 21 times a week.

That means you have two ways to look at it.

You either have 21 opportunities every week to positively affect your weight and health or 21 opportunities every week to negatively affect your weight and health.

If you are eating poorly 21 times a week then you will only have seven times a week, through exercise, to try and improve things and those odds aren't very good.
