Get rid of asbestos while you can

LISMORE City Council is urging people to get rid of unwanted asbestos and save money while they can with less than three months remaining of the Household Asbestos Disposal Scheme.

Up until June 30, people are entitled to 30% off asbestos disposal fees when they take materials to the Lismore Recycling & Recovery Centre.

The NSW EPA/Lismore City Council program is designed to make it cheaper and easier for people to get rid of asbestos.

People will receive the 30% discount if they dispose of up to 10m2 of bonded asbestos via an asbestos removal contractor or if they purchase a Household Asbestos Disposal Kit from Council.

The DIY kits cost $120 and include everything you need to safety get rid of the dangerous waste- from goggles and coveralls to drop sheets and waste asbestos bags - so you can safely remove asbestos from your home.

"The reality is asbestos is if your house or apartment was built or renovated before the mid-1980s, even brick, it will most likely contain asbestos," Waste Operations Coordinator Kevin Trustum said.

"We encourage people to take advantage of the 30% off, but also warn it is essential to remove asbestos safely. If you do not, you place yourself and your family in genuine danger of contracting cancer or other deadly asbestos-related diseases such as mesothelioma."

Asbestos could be anywhere in your home including under floor coverings such as carpets, linoleum and vinyl tiles; behind wall and floor tiles; in cement floors; in internal and external walls; and in ceilings, eaves, garages, roofs, fences, outdoor toilets, backyard and farm sheds, chook sheds and even dog kennels.

The Household Asbestos Disposal Scheme will operate until June 30.

Household Asbestos Disposal Kits are now available from the Lismore Recycling & Recovery Centre's weighbridge.
