George Brandis launches "Yes" campaign event

THE most senior LNP politician and Queensland's first openly gay Federal MP are kicking off the state's Libs and Nats for Yes campaign, despite pressure from some in the party to run dead on the issue.

Attorney-General George Brandis and Brisbane MP Trevor Evans will host the event in Brisbane encouraging conservative voters to support same sex marriage in the postal survey.

LNP president Gary Spence notably slapped down Trevor Evans when he re-sparked the same-sex marriage debate earlier this year, prior to the postal survey going ahead.

He sent out a missive to all LNP members that the party's position was "perfectly clear" that there should be no change to the definition of marriage under the Marriage Act 1961.

Mr Evans yesterday said he faced "no undue pressure" from the party to hold a particular view.

"I'm proud to be part of a party where a diversity of views are encourage. I can't imagine politicians from the Greens expressing a diversity of views and the Labor Party explicitly boots its MPs out of the party for having differences of opinion," he said.

"Mathematically the Yes campaign can't win unless Liberal and National voters vote yes.

"We will continue to be publicly outspoken in our support for the case.

"Possibly even more important, if the Yes vote wins, we will be playing a very critical role in determining how the balance is struck in the Parliament as we go towards legislating this matter."
