Gelding posts handy victory

GRAFTON horse Darshan Joh ($8) had a rare win away from home at the Lismore Turf Club TAB meeting yesterday.

The five-year-old gelding took out the $15,000 Southern Cross University benchmark 60 Handicap (1100m).

It has now won nine starts with seven at Grafton and now number two at Lismore.

Darshan Joh finished a length ahead of five-year-old gelding Great Heart ($6) with seven-year-old gelding Daads Order ($11) another half-length back.

"We had just about everything in our favour coming in," trainer John Shelton said.

"He got in a good position inside and I was always confident coming around the final bend."

Shelton paid tribute to Casino jockey Kasie Stanley for her ability to get the horse in a winning position.

It's the first time Stanley has ridden the horse with Grafton jockey Ben Looker the last to ride the gelding to a win at Lismore in April earlier this year.

"Kasie did just about everything right out there and credit has to go to her," Shelton said.

"She's had him in trackwork before and it was great to be able to give her the ride."

Shelton couldn't put his finger on why the horse has struggled to win away from home.

"It's one of those tough ones but we put the blinkers back on him for the last two starts," he said.

"It seems to be working and we'll stick to that.

"I was actually looking at selling him coming into this race so it's back to the drawing board now. I want to keep him and we'll see what happens from here."

In other races, Casino horse Deebee Cooper ($15) beat a strong field in a benchmark 65 Handicap (2000m). It's the first time the eight-year-old gelding has won since May 2010 at the Casino Racing Club.

"I thought he would run the 2000m pretty well," trainer Neil Creighton said.

"I was actually confident and this is one of its more memorable runs."
