Gang of Youths brings The Positions to Splendour
GANG of Youths is an Australian indie rock group formed by Max Dunn on bass guitar, Jung Kim on guitar and keyboards, David Le'aupepe on lead vocals and piano, Joji Malani on lead guitar and Dom Borszestowski on drums.
At the ARIA Music Awards of 2015, Gang of Youths received five nominations: Breakthrough Artist - Release, Best Rock Album, Best Cover Artist (by Nathan Johnson) for The Positions, Engineer of the Year (Adrian Breakspear, Peter Holz) for Radioface, and Best Australian Live Act for the Gang of Youths National Tour.
Last December, they were recognised as the Live Act of the Year of 2015 and Best Domestic Tour in The AU Review.
Vocalist David Le'aupepe said the band is very excited to be part of the Splendour 2016 line-up announced yesterday.
This is a great album. Congrats. Can you explain the inspiration across The Positions?
Oh stop it. I bet you say that to all the bands.
I was in a relationship with a girl fighting terminal cancer which lasted four years and ended pretty acrimoniously.
The record was written during the relationship and finished after the breakdown of our union.
What's the creative process like for the band?
I write the songs, bring them to a rehearsal room and ask the rest of the band to assist in nutting out structure, then continue to update the song as it runs a gamut of different configurations.
Essentially, I'll come to a room with most of the basic musical foundations like chords, melody, and lyrics, and the flourishes are added from there. The real collaboration in the band happens in the studio, whereas the song-writing aspect is relatively solitary.
What was idea behind the Magnolia music video?
It was a conflation of two ideas: Singin' In The Rain high on mescaline in conjunction with a little bit of Westside Story if it was more ethnically diverse.
Would you have any unreleased music to try out at Splendour?
Magicians never reveal their secrets, friend.
What are you most looking forward to about being at Splendour this year?
Finishing this cool book I'm reading alone backstage.
