CQUniversity Professor Leone Hinton may be the Dean of Nursing and Midwifery, but she is also a self-professed dog lover.

Prof Hinton told CQU's Be Magazine that letting your dog sleep with you could be beneficial for your health.

"Our dog is a part of pet therapy for myself and my husband... and a great stress reliever," she said.

"We are custodians of our pets; we have been entrusted with their wellbeing and quality of life as they are for us.

"They ask for nothing but Maslow's Hierarchy of Need; love, security, food, good health and a place to sleep at night."

Prof Hinton said sharing a bed with her dogs meant the family needed to take on responsibilities with pet care.

"Clean, groomed dogs, flea and tick free ... this makes for a cleaner environment," she said.

"Bigger dogs make for major adjustments."

Prof Hinton said everything worked out fine, as long as everyone followed the bed rules; no hogging the hot water bottle, no barking at night and, most importantly, it's okay to sleep in.
