Funeral mass held today for Bishop John Satterthwaite
A FULL congregation attended St Carthage’s cathedral in Lismore today for the pontifical mass for the former Bishop of Lismore John Steven Satterthwaite.
The funeral procession included dozens of priests and bishops from the region and was lead by Lismore’s current Bishop Geoffrey Jarrett.
A full church of family, friends, and local school children attended the mass held from 10.30am this morning.
Father Satterthwaite became the fourth bishop of Lismore in 1971, and held the position for 30 years before retiring in 2001.
During his term he ordained 45 priests, Bishop Jarrett said.
All together he gave the Catholic church close to 60 years of official service, he said.
Bishop Satterthwaite will be remembered for his “balanced judgement” and for working diligently to build the Lismore congregation through difficult times, he said.
“He helped build a new generation for the church,” Bishop Jarrett said.
