Fundraiser for shark attack victim Mat Lee

THE staff of The Point restaurant have been overwhelmed by the generosity of people wanting to help Ballina shark attack victim Mat Lee.

The Martin St restaurant and bar is holding a fundraiser to help with Mat's medical and rehabilitation expenses on Friday, from 4-6pm.

This follows last week's announcement that surfing champion and former Lennox-Ballina Boardrider Mick Fanning donated $75,000 earned from a 60 Minutes interview to Mat, with Nine boss David Gyngell chipping in a further $25,000.

Function coordinator at the restaurant Rebecca Hambly said the restaurant's national suppliers as well as local businesses had been very willing to donate raffle prizes - and many of them didn't even need to be asked.

Mat's partner Suzy Gerada works at The Point but is taking time off to be with him during his recovery from serious injuries to his legs sustained in the attack that happened while he was bodyboarding.

He has major nerve damage to his legs, and has been operated on, but it's not clear what the outcome will be.

Suzy said Mat had a "long road ahead of him in his recovery".

"With the community backing him all the way, it will make his recovery easier," she said.

"Mat and I are blown away by the community's support and will be forever grateful for the donations and contributions."

Prizes include karma kegs donated by Stone & Wood and Asahi, major prizes from the Ramada Hotel, The Point Restaurant, Surfit Gym Lennox, Jindill Macadamia, T2 and Treasury Wines.

Mat has asked for half the proceeds from the night to be donated to the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter.
