Fundraiser for 9-year-old girl with cancer
A MASSIVE garage sale is to be held on Saturday at Tregeagle Public School to raise vital funds for the family of Mia Johnson who has a rare form of cancer.
The nine-year-old from Goonellabah is battling embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma in her nasopharynx area where the back of the nose meets the throat.
Mia's parents, Brad and Christie, resigned from their jobs and relocated to Brisbane to be with her and her brother, Kahn, while maintaining their rental property here.
Family friend Sherilee Matthews said Mia's parents are "trying to be a normal family as much as they can".
"This is why the huge garage sale," Mrs Matthews said. "We're trying to raise $10,000 to help with expenses including medical bills and rent. Those things don't go away."
A raffle at the garage sale to be drawn about 1pm on Saturday has a host of prizes including a Four Theme Park super pass and car servicing.
Mia was diagnosed in March and is now 10 weeks into her 43-week chemotherapy treatment. However, in five to six weeks she'll start daily radiation over a six-week period.
"At this point, it hasn't spread anywhere but with cancer, you never know.
"Mia's old enough and is very aware of her treatments; chemotherapy every week with double every third week. That makes her extremely sick, but despite everything, she's in really high spirits.
The garage sale is at Tregeagle School this Saturday from 7-1pm. Mrs Matthews can be reached on 0414 442 533.
