Fun brewing after big win
BEING able to whip up tasty coffee has won 22-year-old barista Justin Porrett a trip to Hawaii.
Last Thursday in Sydney, he competed against 12 talented Australian Gloria Jean's baristas and performed well.
Competitors entered in one of three categories and made an espresso, cappuccino and special signature drink for four judges.
"You get 15 minutes to make the judges three drinks each," Mr Porrett said.
"It was pretty tough, there were some really, really amazing performances.
"The coffee was just working for me on the day."
Two of the judges were from Gloria Jean's head office and Mr Porrett said there was pressure to perform.
He was glad he pulled off his signature drink - a coffee infused with orange peel and served with orange cream.
Each winner of the three categories was awarded a holiday to Hawaii, while the overall winner will travel to India to compete against the world's best Gloria Jean's baristas.
Mr Porrett did not win overall but was happy taking out his category and a trip to Hawaii.
"To match some of the best people we have in Australia is pretty special," he said.
The coffee enthusiast will learn about Hawaii's coffee industry when he flies there next year.
"I'll be visiting all the coffee farms and plantations over there," he said.
"That's where a lot of the top quality coffee comes from, like the $100-a-kilo beans.
"That's probably going to blow my mind."
