Friendly Keith Urban farewells dad in Caloundra

ROBERT Urban's family didn't want his funeral to turn into a media circus.

And they got their wish despite the presence of his country music star son Keith.

Only about 10 photographers and camera crews gathered outside the Gregson and Weight chapel in Caloundra for yesterday afternoon's funeral of the larger-than-life Coast man credited with setting Keith Urban on the road to international stardrom.

But yesterday was not about Keith.

It was about him, his mum Marienne, older brother Shane and the 100-odd family and friends paying their respects to Robert Urban, who recently lost his long battle with cancer.

The service itself was closed to the media but there were reports Keith rolled his dad's large motorcycle into the chapel and briefly started its engine.

Outside stood several other motorcycles as well as a number of classic American cars.

Mourners filed straight from the funeral service to the wake and it was close to 6pm before they began leaving.

Keith finally emerged, dressed all in black, with his mum on his arm.

He hugged and shook hands with friends and family before heading for an olive-green Lincoln Continental in front of the chapel.

And in a friendly gesture, he then made a point of acknowledging the media gathered just metres away.

"Thanks guys," he said with a wave after helping his mum into the passenger seat.

Obviously unfamiliar with the car, he spent several minutes working out the levers and knobs before they drove slowly away.

"No one seemed to mind us being there and he was very nice about it," Daily photographer Che Chapman said.

"We were all very respectful and Keith gave us a friendly wave as he left, which was nice of him."
