Friday 13th race day will be lucky for some

IT may be Friday the 13th, but many will be hoping for a spate of good luck today as they head to the 2013 Ballina Cup.

Kicking off the race season for the Northern Rivers, today's Cup will hopefully be blessed with the fine weather forecast, Ballina Jockey Club CEO Craig Kelly said yesterday.

"It's all come together nicely," Mr Kelly said.

"The weather's going to be perfect - warm and sunny without being too hot."

One of the most popular days at the Ballina Jockey Club each year, Mr Kelly said he was hoping for 5000 people, if not more, to walk through the gates to watch the day's exciting eight races.

With residents of the Ballina Shire receiving a half day public holiday due to the big event, Mr Kelly said, it was a good excuse for them to come down to the track and enjoy it.

"It's going to be a good day for a punt, a good day for some social stuff as well," he said.

"There's plenty (of horses) to pick from, plenty of good horses running. Basically every race has a full field."

In amongst the horsing around on the track, there'll also be, of course, lots to eat and drink, Fashions on the Field, and lots of stalls to put your luck on the line and place your bets.
