French win gives Muguruza best and worst moments

GARBINE Muguruza will say goodbye to the year on Saturday night with the conviction that winning the French Open was the best and worst thing that happened to her.

Muguruza, who practised for the first time in her Brisbane International visit on Friday, admits with searing honesty for a top athlete that the mantle of being a first-time major winner was "a double-edged sword” for months.

The 23-year-old Spaniard was ranked as high as No.2 in mid-year but is now No.7 after only making one tour semi-final after her Paris breakthrough.

"Winning Roland Garros has been the best and worst part of the year,” Muguruza told Spain's Marca newspaper.

"At other tournaments it was hard for me to play at the same level. I felt more responsibility, more pressure, more eyes on me, more of a feeling that you have to win because it's what is expected of you.”

Muguruza will be seeded fourth at the Brisbane International, which yesterday lost her fellow Spaniard, world No.12 Carla Suarez Navarro.

The withdrawal does not give Sam Stosur, ranked No.21, one of the eight seedings as she is now ninth on the entry list and would need another seed to pull out to be protected from a top-10 opponent in the first two rounds.

Italy's 18th-ranked Roberta Vinci is the new eighth seed.
