Frankee-Lee’s future now sounding good

SURGERY in the United States to correct a Noosaville girl's hearing appears to have been successful.

Frankee-Lee Shaw, 3, underwent surgery in the United States on Tuesday to build the canal she had been born without in her right ear.

In an email, her mother, Emma, said the surgeon reported that the operation had been successful, even though the ear drum he had hoped was only hidden turned out not to be there.

"Her middle ear was more deformed than he thought and she was also missing the partial ear drum he hoped she had, but Dr Joseph Roberson was able to do a whole reconstruction and make her a wide ear canal and brand new ear drum from a skin graft off her scalp behind her right ear," Emma wrote.

"Now to recover."

Frankee-Lee, who was born with bilateral aural atresia, had already undergone surgery to build a canal in her left ear.

That surgery left her with hearing virtually as good as that of most people and her family hope this week's surgery will be as successful with her right ear.

The operations in the US were made possible thanks to the generous donations of people and organisations who helped Frankee-Lee's family raise the $100,000 necessary.

The family will spend several weeks in the US while Frankee-Lee recovers.

The children, including Frankee-Lee's five brothers and sister, will be treated to a trip to Disneyland while away.
