Four strikes, five charges, 12 months in jail

A GOONELLABAH man was in enough strife when he was caught trying to steal from a chemist's staff room, then when police caught him they added driving a stolen car after drinking and while his licence was disqualified to the list.

Police caught the man on Rous Road at Goonellabah yesterday, only days after he had been spotted rifling through a staff member's handbag in the staff room of a pharmacy at Woodlark Street, Lismore.

In that incident, the man was caught with his hand in the bag and asked to wait for police to arrive. Instead he "became abusive" and ran off.

Then, yesterday morning, police received a report of a blue Holden Barina being stolen from Casino. About 9.45am they spotted the missing car being driven on Rous Rd. They asked for his license and was told he was disqualified from driving. When they breath tested him he turned out to have been drinking too.

Yesterday he fronted Lismore Local Court and was jailed for 12 months on charges of entering a building with intent to commit an indictable offence, being found with an intent of committing an indictable offence when he had a prior conviction, and knowingly driving a stolen car.

The man was expected to face court again today over the drink driving and driving while disqualified charges.
