Fothergill on track for Japan

AFTER returning from a three-day fitness camp, go karter Cian Fothergill is set to take on Japan.

Fothergill will be flying to Japan to compete in the Asia Pacific KF2 Championship.

Fothergill is a first time competitor in the prestigious event at Suzuka.

His path to potential glory began as part of his prize from winning the 2010 Pro Light (KF1) Championship.

After encouragement from his father as a 10-year-old, after playing various sports from an early age, Fothergill became involved in karting.

"My old man got me into it. I played a lot of sports and used to BMX then Dad encouraged me to race karts," Fothergill said.

Labelled as the hottest young talent in Australian karting the 22-year-old said pressure has not been too bad and he is keen to get on the track.

"They invited me to go to Japan and it has been a pretty interesting ride so far," he said.

"It's definitely good to go overseas. It's another thing to put on my resume."

Fothergill said his goal is to finish in the top three but ultimately he is "going for the win" and he feels fully prepared.

Fothergill has added two new members to his team, sponsor Eastern Creek Karts and manager Peter Galvin who are both supporting him in his overseas endeavours.

"He (Peter) came on board this year and we want to move onto something bigger," he said.

After Japan Fothergill has aspirations to move into the big league - including Super Cars.

"There are a few stepping stones to go through but that is what we are aiming for," he said. Fothergill will fly out to Japan on Monday to compete. He will have two days of practice before the big final which will be held on November 13.
