Former winners safely through

FORMER winners Danny Wills, Yerin Brown, Jarrad Sullivan and Mark Richardson yesterday won through the opening rounds of the Ben King Surf Classic.

But the early standouts in the open division, surfed in clean 3-foot waves at Broken Head, were Gold Coast surfer Dave Reardon-Smith and Lennox Head’s James Wood.

The contest is expected to continue at Broken Head today but the venue for the semi-finals and finals tomorrow will depend on prevailing conditions.

“We had a great right-hander breaking for about 100 metres,” Byron Boardriders club president Bryce Cameron said. “It hasn’t had this good a bank in years.”
