Former soldier plots victory in golf comp

IT WAS the talk of the Ballina Golf Club’s 19th hole: Coolangatta-Tweed’s Damien Jordan’s scintillating 5-under 102 from 27 holes to claim the 2008 Northern Rivers District Golf Association championship at the weekend.

The score saw the former soldier, a two-tour veteran of Afghanistan, win the title from Murwillumbah’s Chris Dean, who carded 109.

Ocean Shores’ Daniel Morgan was the pick of the locals with his 7-under 104 winning him the colts champion and the club champion of champions titles.

Defending title holder John Rixon came in eight shots behind the winner with 110.

Morgan, 20, was two shots off the pace at 6-under when he lost his ball at the 20th which rattled him somewhat before rallying to peg back the leaders.

For his efforts, Morgan will play at the NSW champion of champions in Sydney.

Jordan won a spot on the PGA qualifying school in Melbourne.

A strong north-easterly breeze challenged the 103-strong field.

Organisers were impressed with the number of local juniors playing well.

The tournament moves to Casino next year.
