Form points to Sea Skye to win the XXXX Gold Lismore Cup

MICHAEL Cahill has a better idea than most of what it takes to win today's $45,000 XXXX Gold Lismore Cup.

The leading Queensland jockey will ride the early favourite, the Bevan Laming-trained Sea Skye which comes into the race with solid form in Melbourne.

That includes placings at three of his last four starts at Flemington and Sandown over 1800 metres, 2100 metres and 2000 metres.

Cahill won the Lismore cup in 1997 on Mack 'N' Me and again in 2010 on Chilled while he ran second last year on the John Thompson-trained They Won't Last.

He thought there was a trick to riding Lismore until last year's cup when beaten by the Ross Stitt-trained Southern Shimmer.

"There has always been a perception that at Lismore you had to have your horse in the first three or four," Cahill said.

"I thought I had last year's cup won, following that theory, until Southern Shimmer came from a long way back to beat me.

"I don't know much about Sea Skye but I will sit down tonight (Wednesday) and go through the tapes of his runs.

"From what little I do know he can either get back or race up on the pace so I guess it will depend on what speed there is in the race early as to where I position him."

Meanwhile Mini Delago's breeder and part owner Gary Nielsen said the mare is fit and well and ready to aim for her third consecutive win in the Lismore Workers Club Rousillon Hcp (1516m) at today's meeting.

The mare started her latest sequence by winning at Grafton on August 26, then won the Benchmark 70 (1300m) at Ballina on cup day.

This will be her fourth run back from a spell and again will have the services of Ben Looker who was astride for the previous two wins.

She has not won beyond 1400 metres but the way she won at Ballina suggests she will have no trouble handling the extra distance.

Nielsen's one worry is that she is conceding weight to the rest of the field.

"She is only a little thing and we have to hope that her class will carry her through," he said.

Eight races are on the card, with gates open at 11am.
