Chelsea legend Frank Lampard could sign with Melbourne City

FOOTBALL: Hot on the heels of Spanish superstar David Villa, Chelsea legend Frank Lampard is believed to have signed on for a stint in the A-League with Melbourne City next season.

A report in London's Daily Mirror claimed the 36-year-old midfielder would step out for the club formally known as the Melbourne Heart before joining Major League Soccer franchise New York City with Villa.

Both New York City and Melbourne City are owned by Manchester City boss Sheik Mansour.

Chelsea goalkeeper and former Socceroo Mark Schwarzer confirmed he had spoken to Lampard, who is Chelsea's all-time leading goalscorer and was a part of England's squad in Brazil.

"All I can say is that he did ask me about Melbourne Heart. He did ask me what Melbourne was like and what Melbourne Heart was like," Schwarzer told the Daily Mirror.

"There is huge potential in the game in Australia and it would be unbelievable if he went to Australia.

"I said to him that he would love living there."
