The Veronicas stun with topless performance

The Veronicas bare it all for stunning ARIAs performance

QUEENSLAND duo The Veronicas were among the ARIA Awards' biggest losers on Wednesday night, beaten by Flume, Violent Soho and Troye Sivan. But victory comes in more forms than just an award statue.

In the aftermath of Australian music's night of nights, and while we all pretend that One Direction didn't again win, The Veronicas showed the real way to win at the ARIAs.

When the fill-in hosts exploded on to the stage wearing little but a pair of body-hugging tights and a thick layer of blood-red glitter paint, they pumped up the interest in a ceremony that can be notoriously stuffy.

Flume may have taken the most awards, and Johnny Farnham may have reminded us once again that we cannot trust him when he says goodbye, but it was the Veronicas that dominated the headlines and the watercooler conversations.

Was it too much? Was it glamorous and provocative or tacky?

Whatever it was, The Veronicas' performance was calculated to overshadow all others.

That sort of thing is in their blood.

Flume takes out top gong at 30th annual ARIA Awards

FLUME is once again the darling of the ARIAs, taking out five awards at tonight's 30th annual awards ceremony.

The electronic musician, producer and DJ took out the top prize of Album of the Year for his second studio album Skin.

"Wow this is the one I really, really wanted to win so thank you everybody once again," Flume, aka Harley Streten, said.

"There's a lot of amazing artists up for this one, thank you. In a time of singles and songs, albums still matter."

His awards haul of eight trophies also included Best Male Artist, Best Dance Release, Best Independent Release and three previously awarded artisan awards.

The 25-year-old is no stranger to the ARIAs stage, having won four awards for his self-titled debut album in 2013.

Other multiple award winners were Violent Soho (Best Group and Best Rock Album) and Troye Sivan (Best Video and Apple Music Song of the Year).

"It's been a long time, 30 years, so there's a lot of people to thank. I've brought an analog piece of paper," Neil Finn joked before going on to thank family, past band members and managers, their crew and their fans.

In a fitting tribute, Missy Higgins and Bernard Fanning performed two of the band's hits Fall At Your Feet and Better Be Home Soon.

Crowded House, who have come full circle since receiving the very first ARIA Award ever presented for Best Video, also took to the stage with a show-stopping performance of Distant Sun from the band's 1993 album Together Alone.

"It has also been our honour to welcome Crowded House into the ARIA Hall of Fame," ARIA Chairman Denis Handlin said.

"This year's ARIA Awards have been a great success, with our incredibly talented artists demonstrating the profound impact and diversity of Australian music."

Awards hosts The Veronicas turned heads when they opened the show covered in head-to-toe body glitter to perform their hit song In My Blood.

Other highlights included John Farnham's show-closing rendition of You're The Voice and Jimmy Barnes and Jessica Mauboy's performance of The Easybeats classic Good Times.

Several political and humanitarian issues were also raised during the awards ceremony.

Sia, Troye Sivan and Kylie Minogue all advocated for marriage quality and the LGBTQI community, while Ben Lee and John Butler showed solidarity with the Standing Rock protestors in America and Montaigne made a statement about a range of issues by having 'people over profit' painted on her chest.
