Flood of goals in men's hockey
GOALKEEPERS were kept busy in both games in Far North Coast men’s A-grade hockey on Saturday.
Northern Star defeated Alstonville 6-1 and East Lismore accounted for Ballina 7-2.
In the early game at Hepburn Park, Goonellabah, Star dominated the first half and capitalised towards the end of the half, scoring three goals when the Alstonville goalkeeper was temporarily suspended.
Tempers on both sides flared, resulting in a player from each side receiving a temporary suspension.
Star led 5-0 at the break but the second half was more even with each team scoring once.
For Star, Matt Harmon slotted three goals, Mitch Carter two and Ash Waring one.
Heath Edwards figured in the best-and-fairest points and scored Alstonville’s only goal.
Mitch Harley stood out for Alstonville, particularly when defending the goal in the absence of the goalkeeper, making some amazing saves off the line.
He was well-supported by Troy Cooper and Jay Wotherspoon.
Northern Star’s best were Matt and James Harmon with Waring also putting in a solid performance.
In the first half of the other game, Ballina looked the goods and probably should have led at the break.
Ballina’s attack was relentless, creating many penalty corner opportunities.
Easts in the first half seemed to fritter away possession.
Sam Davis and Lou Morgan found the back of the net for Ballina but Simon Mackney (two goals) and Chris Clark gave Easts the lead at the break 3-2.
Ballina’s Tony Porter was a tower of strength throughout and featured in the best-and-fairest points.
In the second half fitness seemed to leave Ballina and Easts added four unanswered goals; two to 14-year-old Brad Hughes and one each to Daniel Hughes and Michael Broadbent.
Easts combined well in the second half with outstanding efforts from Ryan Holding, Jamie Hetherington and Brad Hughes.
