Five decades of doing good deeds

FIFTY years ago this year, the Rotary Club of Lismore West was sponsored to be the second Rotary Club in the City of Lismore.

It was decided an application be submitted to Rotary International to admit to membership the Rotary Club of Lismore West.

Over the past 50 years, the Rotary Club of Lismore West has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in supporting a wide variety of charities, disadvantaged groups and hum-anitarian programs throughout the Northern Rivers community, nationally and internationally, including the Rotary Foundation.

In 1995 the club built a “Wee Barbie” catering unit, which over the past 16 years has been used to raise tens of thousands of dollars for Rot-ary programs and, at times, providing free catering for communityorganisations and functions.

The Rotary Club of Lismore West also developed professional health videos on breast, prostate, bowel and skin cancer and marketed them throughout Australia from 1990-2002.

The Prostrate Cancer Awareness video was particularly successful and was the first video producedon prostate cancer in the Southern Hemisphere and only the second in the world.

To celebrate its 50-year milestone, the club is hosting an anniversary dinner for 160 present and past members. Ten Rotarians from sister club, the Rotary Club of Yamato Takada in Japan, are also flying in to attend the anniversary dinner to be held at the Lismore Workers' Club this Saturday night.
