THE NSW Government's new team of eight coal seam gas liaison officers will be rotated through Casino in the coming weeks, with the first available today and tomorrow at Casino's Community and Cultural Centre.

Contrary to previous expectations, no single officer will be based permanently at Casino, but made available for face-to-face appointments depending on local demand for up to three days each week.

The eight officers will be rotated through 45 country councils across the state in which CSG exploration or production is expected in the future.

This week's visiting officer, Steve Cozens, is a professional geologist with a background in coal geology and later CSG and petroleum exploration and was formerly a senior project officer.

Mr Cozens and his seven colleagues will visit 45 country councils across the state in which CSG exploration or production is expected in the future.

According to NSW Department of Trade and Investment, the liaison officers can explain the science of coal seam gas and clarify some of the common questions about the industry in NSW.

These include the difference between exploration and production wells, how the different approvals processes work, the codes of practice around CSG well integrity and the bans on BTEX chemicals and evaporation ponds.

Officers will also explain in their 30-minute presentations and Q&A sessions the specifics of the ban on CSG around residential areas.

NSW is under pressure to produce its own gas, with gas prices expected to rise sharply in coming years because of skyrocketing demand for gas in Asia coinciding with the expiry of NSW's long-term supply contracts with South Australia and Victoria.

To make an appointment with Mr Cozens today or tomorrow phone Casino's Community and Cultural Centre on 6662 1080.

A website, csg.nsw.gov.au, will be launched in mid-April.
