Firefighting leader puts down his vest after 20 years
YESTERDAY marked the retirement of Mark Johnston, Regional Manager of NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service on the Far North Coast.
As fire Services such as the NSW Rural Fire Service and land managers such as National Parks work very closely together, the RFS Northern Rivers Zone posted a tribute to Mr Johnston on Facebook.
"As Regional Manager here on the Far North Coast, Mark has been instrumental in ensuring an excellent working relationship between all whom work together to look after the community and the environment," the tribute read.
"Being a Regional Manager is not an easy job, but one that has been rewarding we are sure.
"His calm and considered influence in many an Incident Management Team dealing with major fires will be missed.
"Over the last 20 years Mark has been there at almost every single major fire to provide guidance and assistance.
"He has passed on his considered calmness and cool nature to those whom have worked with him.
"Fortunately he has a team that has worked with him that does and will continue to do an amazing job.
"Many will not know Mark as he never sought fame or acknowledgement, he always had the community, volunteers and his staff as his number one priorities.
"Enjoy your retirement and many fishing trips Mark from all in the Northern Rivers!
"By the way.....We will drop some RFS membership forms in your mailbox..You have much to offer our community into the distant future."
