Firefighters ready for Rally

THE fireys will be standing by, hoses in hand, should they be required to douse any flames at this weekend's Repco Rally.

The NSW Rural Fire Service will have 16 trucks, one plane and a helicopter on standby just in case.

Manager for the Northern Rivers, Michael Brett, said a fire truck would be stationed at each of the rally's seven stages.

“That is in addition to the rally's own vehicles,” he said.

There will be a truck at the four public viewing areas.

Five extra firefighting vehicles will be available should they be needed.

The plane and helicopter will be on standby in Casino.

The planning has been going on for months.

Mr Brett said he was confident they had things covered.

Over the three days more than 100 firefighters from all over the region will be part of the service's volunteer effort.

Mr Brett said he expected the cost of the service would be paid for by the rally and the NSW Premier's Department.

The SES had been expecting to assist the rally with road closures, but a last-minute discovery revealing volunteers did not hold the appropriate qualifications meant they would no longer be involved with the event.
