Police appeal for witnesses after a firefighter was attacked

A WALK home from a Fire and Rescue NSW Christmas party at Yamba has landed a local firefighter in hospital after he woke up bruised and battered.

Police are now calling for witnesses to find out what happened.

Coffs/Clarence duty officer Brendan Gorman said the victim, in his mid 50s, left the Pacific Hotel after the work function between 12.15-12.45am on Sunday morning.

He walked from Coldstream St down Clarence St, and has no recollection from then on.

He later woke up outside the front stairs of a Queen St address with a number of injuries, and contacted an ambulance who drove him to Maclean Hospital.

Police were contacted about lunchtime and obtained a statement from the victim at the hospital, before conducting a canvas of the area.

The firefighter suffered a number of soft tissue injuries, which Yamba Fire and Rescue captain David Woods said included a dislocated shoulder.

He added that the employee had only drunk two beers before attempting to walk home, and despite his injuries was making a good recovery.

The incident may also spark talk of installing CCTV cameras on Yamba streets.

"There seems to be a lot that happens around there, so I think it would make it a lot safer if we could get cameras here," Mr Woods said. "I hope we can get some community awareness, it's something for the community and chamber of commerce to consider."

Police have appealed for any potential witnesses to phone Yamba Police on 6646 3472 or CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.
