Firebirds star Aiken sidelined by hand injury

STAR Queensland shooter Romelda Aiken has broken a bone in her right hand but Firebirds fans should not despair as the Jamaican says she will not miss a game in the Trans-Tasman competition.

Aiken will be sidelined for six weeks after getting injured playing for Jamaica's Sunshine Girls.

Aiken broke the fourth metacarpal bone in her right hand during a practice game against an under-21 Jamaican side on Friday night and will have surgery tomorrow in Kingston, Jamaica.

The big shooter was injured as she battled for the ball.

"I thought I'd hurt my nail at first and then looked down to see my finger out of shape," Aiken said.

"It means six weeks without ball work which I guess gives me the opportunity to work on my fitness.

"The good news is I'll be back in plenty of time for pre-season training with the Firebirds for a big 2013 ANZ Championship campaign."

Firebirds Coach Roselee Jencke said Aiken's injury was a minor setback.

"It's disappointing for Romelda in regards to her international duties, however a six-week rehabilitation period won't affect her Firebirds commitments," she said.
