Fire fighters battle Riverina blaze
FIRE fighters were at the Riverina Stock Feeds Mill for five hours last night after a fire started near one of the mill's highly combustible silos.
At 6:30pm, NSW Fire and Rescue received a 000 call about the fire and crews from Lismore, Casino and Goonellabah rushed to the mill.
About 15 people were evacuated from the Reynolds Rd mill.
A NSW Fire and Rescue spokesman said the fire was in the ducting above one of the grain hoppers.
The spokesman said it was a delicate operation because of the danger of a dust explosion.
"It is the dust that is the danger," he said.
"They can't introduce oxygen, as if it's hot in there, they may ignite the dust."
Fire fighters used their hoses to gradually cool the ducting down and monitored the heat level through the operation, all while wearing breathing apparatus.
The fire was extinguished at about 12:30am this morning, after fire crews cut through an area of the ducting.
Two months ago a similar situation occurred at the same mill.
In November, the mill's employees were evacuated after a staff member noticed a fire on one of the conveyor belts.
Fire fighters were on scene for several hours before the fire was extinguished.
