Filmmaker dreams of derby stardom

THE excitement of this year's Bangalow Billycart Derby will be caught on camera by two local documentary-makers.

Byron shire film-makers Jane Saunders and Hannah Ross, who is also a journalist at The Northern Star, want to create a documentary tracking the progress of four people as they build a billycart and compete in the derby.

To be called Derby Dreams, it will look at the male bonding aspects of billycarts - and the cross-generational endurance of the sport.

"We think it's really interesting that there's been this resurgence in traditional entertainment," Ms Saunders said.

"Before skateboards and before PlayStations we had billycarts which we made ourselves.

"Even in 2008 when we have this kind of entertainment billycarts are enduring."

The two film-makers are currently in the research phase of the project and are looking for people, especially women, who are involved with billycarting.

"We are looking for people who are going over the top this year," Ms Saunders said. If this sounds like you, call Ms Saunders on 0434 122 713.
